The State Prosecutor’s Office on Friday filed an indictment against a soldier from Afula, charging him with the premeditated murder of Sharif Hadid of Daliyat al-Carmel.
According to the indictment, Hadid was shot and killed during a confrontation that erupted between the two on Highway 6. Prosecutors rejected the soldier’s claim that he acted in self-defense and asked the court to keep him in custody until the legal proceedings are completed.
The prosecutor charged the soldier with intentional murder, aggravated injury, assault, intentional damage to a vehicle, and obstruction of justice, according to the official release.
Reckless driving on Highway 6 ends in tragedy
According to the official investigation, the charged soldier confronted Hadid on Highway 6 after a "reckless driving situation."
"The defendant exited his vehicle carrying an M16 assault rifle, approached the other vehicle and attacked the late Sherif Hadid, striking him in the face with the barrel of the weapon," read the official investigation.
The investigation also revealed that Hadid, who was hit in the face, charged the soldier with a knife before getting shot. "Even when the deceased tried to move away, the defendant continued to shoot at him," read the report.
Additionally, the prosecutors said that the soldier acted to disrupt the investigation, "including by collecting and throwing away the bullet casings, removing the cartridge he used and replacing it with a full cartridge, all with the aim of preventing or obstructing the judicial process."
