While the bitter war continues outside, here’s a winning recipe for chocolate-filled French toast that will help get through tough times with a taste that leaves you wanting more.
Chocolate-Filled French Toast
Ingredients (for 4 French toasts):
4 slices of double challah or other bread (see notes on slicing)
3 eggs
150 ml milk
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
A pinch of salt
Additionally:
4 heaping tablespoons of chocolate spread
80 grams of butter
2 packets of vanilla sugar
Instructions:
Cut the challah into four double slices, but don’t cut all the way through, so the slices remain connected at the edge. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and salt until smooth. Place a heaping tablespoon of chocolate spread in the cavity between the two slices that are connected at the edge. Repeat with the remaining three slices.
Heat a large pan over medium heat. Dip the slices thoroughly in the egg and milk mixture on all sides. Melt half of the butter in the pan and place the challah slices inside. Fry each side until golden. Sprinkle vanilla sugar over the slices before flipping. Flip, then add the remaining butter in cubes, moving it around the slices in the pan so it spreads evenly. Serve with fresh whipped cream and fresh fruits.
