Decisions on policing, prosecutions, and hate-speech enforcement are increasingly seen as a test of whether Australia can keep Jewish communities safe.

The attack was barely a month after Syria announced it had signed a political cooperation agreement with the US-led coalition against ISIS.

There are many ISIS detainees in eastern Syria, including many families of ISIS fighters. These detainees will need to be addressed, and the families de-radicalized. 

A Syrian interior ministry spokesperson told Syrian television channel Al-Ikhbariya that the attacker did not have a leadership role in the security forces.
