An acquisition of Greenland may give the United States more control over the Arctic region and an ability to counter aggression in a strategic region, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.

Denmark has historically accommodated the US presence because Copenhagen lacks the capability to defend Greenland and benefits from US security guarantees through NATO.

Barrot said the subject would be raised at his meeting with the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland later in the day.

US officials said discussions are underway in the Oval Office on acquiring Greenland, with the White House saying military force remains an option.

Greenland, a former Danish colony, has the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement but depends heavily on Danish subsidies.

Barrot arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Saturday evening to express France's "solidarity" with the Greenlandic people, French newspaper Lematin reported.

"We cannot change what has happened. But we can take responsibility. Therefore, on behalf of Denmark, I would like to say: Sorry," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.

Trump has said that he wants to make Greenland part of the US and previously stated that he does not rule out using military or economic power.
