US President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was invited to be a member of his "Board of Peace" initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts, including Phase II of his Gaza peace plan.
"He's been invited," Trump told reporters.
Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had received an invitation to join the Board of Peace, and that Moscow was reviewing the proposal, expressing hope for future contacts with Washington regarding it.
Trump pushes for tariffs on France, shares texts with Macron
Trump added that French President Emmanuel Macron would also join the board, and that he plans to impose a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes if not.
When asked by a reporter about Macron saying he will not join the board, Trump said, "Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon."
Trump later shared a text sent to him by Macron discussing Iran and Syria, and asking to meet in Paris after the Davos forum.
"The French President defends the same line in public as in private," a source close to Macron said.
Trump to pursue purchase of Greenland in Davos
While speaking to reporters, Trump also confirmed he would discuss acquiring Greenland at this week's Davos World Economic Forum.
"We have to have it. They have to have this done. They can't protect it, Denmark, they're wonderful people," Trump said.
"I know the leaders, they're very good people, but they don't even go there."
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he spoke to NATO to discuss a meeting in Davos regarding Greenland.
As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back - On that, everyone agrees!" Trump wrote.
"The United States of America is the most powerful Country anywhere on the Globe, by far. Much of the reason for this is a rebuilding of our Military during my First Term, which rebuilding continues at even more expedited pace. We are the only POWER that can ensure PEACE throughout the World - And it is done, quite simply, through STRENGTH!"
