The Israel Air Force sent 15 flight cadets to military jail for three to six days due to potential security leaks, it said on Sunday.
In addition, one of the trainee’s commanders, a major, will be court-martialed for his role in the incident.
According to the IDF, the flight cadets in a pilot program had completed a special, intensive training period. It was supposed to conclude with a weekend at a hotel, but under strict conditions requiring the trainees to remain isolated from any civilians.
Israeli cadets hosted visitors, drank alcohol in violation of IAF rules
Many of the cadets, however, hosted visitors, including significant others, at the hotel in violation of the rules. They also drank alcohol, creating the potential for a leak of classified information.
The cadets may still be allowed to graduate from the pilot course, but each case will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Some of the cadets who were given stricter punishments were penalized more severely for initially failing to confess to violating the rules, with the IDF requiring two separate probes over the weekend before discovering the full details of the incident.
