The expected escalation, the sources said, is likely to come in the form of a draft surge, accelerated mobilization, and intensified strikes against Ukraine and its allies in Europe.

“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will forever have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland," Trump said.

Denmark will summon Russia's Copenhagen ambassador to a meeting over the incident, Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus separately told broadcaster TV2.

According to three NATO diplomats, the US administration called on member states of the alliance to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the court’s founding treaty, and end their support for it.

Britain and Norway disclosed in April that they had uncovered a covert Russian operation in Arctic waters. But the discovery of the new weapon and the location of the operation had not been reported.
