CDC worked with the two states to review poison center call records and found 15 adult patients had taken an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and been admitted to a hospital.

Cough, fatigue and shortness of breath were among the symptoms reported while testing that persisted even weeks later, according to the report.

Nearly 19% of all people who came in contact with 10-19 year olds got infected, more than any other age group included in the study.

The CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting “high-touch” surfaces including phones, tables, doorknobs, light switches, tablets, and more.

The estimate comes as government officials note that many new cases are showing up in young people who do not exhibit symptoms and may not know they have it.

The survey's lead author said it was undertaken following a "sharp increase" in calls to poison control centers for exposure to cleaners and disinfectants during the pandemic.

"The awareness of Israel's pediatricians has been raised regarding the syndrome," Israel Pediatric Association head Shai Ashkenazi said.
