Etna, which towers over Sicily's east coast, is one of the world's most active volcanoes and frequently disrupts air traffic at Catania, the island's main airport and Italy's fifth busiest.

"Both aircraft were stopped abruptly," the transport safety bureau said in a statement.

"We're not at war, but we are the daily target of hybrid warfare," Dobrindt said. "Espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, or covert operations by foreign powers aimed at destabilizing Germany."

The incident follows an antisemitic attack against an IDF reservist at a cafe on Siargao Island in the Philippines on August 3, according to the Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry.

Footage posted on social media showed Israeli passengers standing inside the aircraft as police officers climbed the stairs toward the entrance.

Forensic experts found that the explosives attached to the drone were of a high military grade, reported the outlets, which also included broadcasters NDR and WDR, citing a confidential police report

The move comes after Transportation Minister Miri Regev pressed Israeli security officials to clear the refueling aircraft from the airport in order to ensure normal operations.

Authorities said they were investigating a drone found near a runway at the airport during the night, which the Bild newspaper said contained a detonator.

"The FAA is investigating a safety incident involving Marine One but it didn’t appear to be a dangerous close call and the aircraft weren’t apparently converging," the FAA said.

The announcement follows an air traffic control outage in Greece on Sunday, during which thousands of passengers were delayed as flights across Greece were grounded for several hours.
