An indictment was filed against an individual on Sunday who stabbed a transgender person in an apartment in the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Yam, Israel Police said.

The stabbing occurred on July 18, police noted.

The indictment was filed against the suspect through the Haifa District Attorney's Office, with a request by police to extend his detention. The suspect's detention had been extended multiple times, a police spokesperson said.

Shortly after the stabbing, police officers arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect behind the attack after tracking him down quickly, and an investigation was opened against him.

A police investigation showed that the transgender person who was stabbed is a foreign resident and had arranged to meet with the suspect in an apartment with another man, but was attacked after an argument intensified between the two in their meeting.

No update on victim's initially critical condition

The victim sustained several wounds from the stabbing and was evacuated to hospital by medical personnel in critical condition on July 18. Sunday's statement did not update on the victim's condition.

The suspect in a violent attack on two transgender women in Jaffa in November was released from custody after telling the court that the attack was not due to the women's gender orientation but related to an argument on the road, Ynet reported at the time.

The women, 21 and 17, told police that they had been riding a scooter together in Jaffa when a car pulled up next to them. The passenger spat on them and then got out of the car at the next stop light to attack them with a hammer.

The Tel Aviv City Council approved a proposal by council member Reut Nagar to consider allocating part of the city's affordable housing project to the transgender community, according to N12 last July.

This decision followed troubling testimonies published by "Transiot Israel" association, about the harassment transgender women face when seeking housing, N12 noted at the time.
