After launching the feature in the Android beta version, the popular messaging app WhatsApp is beginning to roll out one of the most useful recent features widely: Customizable group member tags. The new update is now available to iOS (iPhone) users in the official version on the App Store.

The new feature allows each group participant to add a short “tag” that will appear next to their name within the chat and in the participant list. The goal is to provide clear context for a person’s role within the group—for example, “Customer Service Rep,” “Event Organizer,” or even “Noam’s Dad” in kindergarten groups—without needing to change the general username on the account.

How does it work?

The tag is managed directly from the group’s info screen by clicking on the username. There, users can enter free text (within a certain character limit) that reflects their role in the group. To maintain a clean and readable interface, the tags support plain text only—no links, special symbols, or overly flashy designs. Once saved, the tag becomes immediately visible to all group members, including new joiners.

Additionally, tags are saved to the user’s account and will reappear even after reinstalling the app. This makes communication much more contextual and efficient, especially in communities and professional groups. For now, the feature is being gradually rolled out to iPhone users running the latest version, and it is expected to reach all users in the coming weeks.
