The haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Shas party denied reports on Saturday that it had agreed to join a coalition led by Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot.

"Contrary to the false reports being spread this evening by various journalists regarding Shas' supposed joining of the Eisenkot government, this is complete fake news," the party said in a statement. "As instructed by the Council of Torah Sages, Shas is part of the right-wing bloc, lovers of the Torah and Jewish tradition."

The party added that "only official Shas announcements are decisive, not reports from journalists or tweeters."

The statement comes following an N12 News report earlier on Saturday that Shas would not obstruct the formation of an opposition bloc coalition involving United Torah Judaism (UTJ).

Yisrael Beytenu's Liberman drops veto on haredi parties in coalition

N12's Amit Segal reported on Thursday that Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman dropped his veto on forming a government with haredi parties, opening the door for talks between the opposition bloc and UTJ.

According to reports, the bloc is discussing the possibility of drafting a more lenient IDF conscription law, with the current assumption being that Shas would be forced to support the move under pressure from Rabbi Lando.
