Millions of people are used to opening an avocado the classic way – slicing lengthwise, twisting, removing the pit. But a user from South Africa named Mikey, currently on vacation in New York, shared a completely different method, and the internet lost it.

In a video that went viral with over 10 million views on TikTok, Mikey simply cuts the avocado from the tip, like peeling a banana from the opposite side. Why? To expose only the part he needs, and thus keep the rest of the avocado green and fresh.

“This is how I’ve cut avocados for as long as I can remember,” Mikey told news.com.au. “Instead of exposing the whole fruit and letting it brown, you just open a little, take a spoon, and cut what you need.”

And when he’s done? He closes it with the peel and puts it back in the fridge.

This is how he does it

As expected, the internet exploded. Users wrote that it’s a “genius” idea that saves half an avocado from going to waste. Others admitted they had never seen anyone open the fruit this way and were excited by the simplicity. On the other hand, there were those who struggled to grasp the concept: they couldn’t understand the idea of a “leftover avocado.” For them, an avocado is always devoured in its entirety immediately – and thinking otherwise is almost heresy.

Mikey said the idea to post the video came to him completely by chance: “I was making myself sourdough toast, like always, and my wife’s friend saw how I was cutting the avocado and said, ‘What is that?! I’ve never seen anything like it.’ So she convinced me to post it on TikTok – and from there, everything blew up.”
