Mossad Director David Barnea on Wednesday appointed "A" as his new deputy chief, signalling strong efforts to stabilize the agency as it transitions to new leadership.

Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed his military secretary, Maj. Gen. Roman Gofman, to become the next Mossad chief in June 2026 when Barnea steps down.

Gofman was a surprise choice because he has no direct prior connection to the Mossad, though his supporters have noted that he worked extensively with the agency as its conduit to Netanyahu.

Some critics of Gofman have warned of a wave of senior Mossad resignations.

Barnea's appointment of "A", who had been the lead candidate from within the agency to be the next spy chief but lost out to Gofman, appeared to be a move to try to get these senior officials to stay.

In addition, A has over two decades of experience, including running two different operational divisions of the Mossad, experience that could make him extra useful to Gofman as he is learning the ropes and the differences between the Mossad and the IDF.

A will replace "Ayin", who served as Barnea's deputy chief for the last two years, including playing a key role in the Iran War this past June.

Barnea will have concluded a five-year term in June 2026, being the only defense chief since October 7, 2023, to serve out his term.
