Likud candidate Avi Slama, 43, won the mayoral election in Netanya on Tuesday evening, taking over the city's leadership after 27 years under Miriam Feirberg-Ikar, who passed away after a long battle with a serious illness.

The newly elected mayor secured a first-round victory, defeating three other candidates and officially concluding the election campaign.

Slama celebrates his victory

In his victory speech Tuesday night, Slama took a moment to honor his predecessor, saying, "This year, Netanya said goodbye to a giant. Miriam Feirberg-Ikar, who dedicated her life to this city and, for nearly three decades, was its beating heart. I take on this role with great respect, with the intention of leading Netanya to national achievements and bringing the new spirit and changes that time requires."

At the peak of his speech, surrounded by hundreds of supporters, Slama paused to thank his partners in the campaign.

"I want to thank, first and foremost, my dear wife, Maayan, who supported me throughout this challenging journey and was my anchor, and my beloved children, who gave me strength every day."

He added, "A deep thanks to the hundreds of dedicated volunteers and the incredible campaign team who worked tirelessly, day and night, driven by their strong belief in our path. This victory is not mine. It’s yours. It’s for the city of Netanya."

Slama also addressed the residents of Netanya, saying, "I thank the residents of Netanya for placing their trust in me. I promise to be the mayor of everyone, for those who voted for me and for those who didn’t. Together, we will make Netanya a better place to live."

The newly elected mayor, an economist and former senior manager in the banking sector, has been a prominent council member and opposition leader in recent years.

Slama ran on the promise to refresh the municipal system, improve transportation infrastructure, and invest in education and personal security.

"Netanya is a gem, but it’s time to polish it with the tools of the 21st century," he concluded.
