A shooting killed four, and injured 10, in Stockton, northern California, on Saturday evening, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

"This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited. Early indications suggest this may be a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities," the sheriff's office stated.

"Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances leading up to this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this senseless violence," they added, calling on anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.

The Vice Mayor of Stockton, Jason Lee, revealed that the shooting happened at an ice cream shop where a child's birthday party had been taking place.

California Governor Gavin Newsom's office put out a statement saying that he has been briefed on the situation and that the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is monitoring it.
