Chinese President Xi Jinping thanked US President Donald Trump for supporting a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during their meeting in South Korea on Thursday.
Xi, who spoke through a translator, said that China and the US "should be friends," and that the two "are involved in stopping other conflicts in the world."
"It is natural that two large economies will not always get along," Xi said, as the two discussed a trade deal.
Trump said a trade deal with China could be signed on Thursday, saying that he expected the two leaders to have a successful meeting and cast the Chinese president as a tough negotiator.
Xi and Trump said that trade negotiators from the world's two largest economies had reached a basic consensus on a deal.
Xi also said that China's development does not contradict Trump's vision of "Making America Great Again," China's state news agency Xinhua reported.
"It's a great honor... I think we're going to have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time - and it's an honor to have you with us," Trump told Xi.
Trump instructs Pentagon to resume nuclear testing
Trump, ahead of the meeting, said he has instructed the Department of Defense to immediately resume testing nuclear weapons on an "equal basis" with other nuclear powers.
"Because of other countries' testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately," Trump said on Truth Social, ahead of the meeting with Xi in South Korea.
"Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years," Trump noted.
Iran is rebuilding its ballistic missile manufacturing capabilities with aid from China, despite the guidance of United Nations sanctions, CNN reported on Wednesday.
