The protected space – whether a reinforced security room (Mamad), shelter, or fortified stairwell – has become an integral part of our daily routine. Beyond the safety measures required by Home Front Command guidelines, it is important to also prepare for a comfortable, calm, and organized stay.

These days, it is especially important to make the protected space functional and pleasant – particularly for extended stays or cold nights. Here is a brief guide to the items that should be present in every protected space.

Roll-up mattress – for comfortable sleep and rest: Spending extended time on a cold concrete floor is not a pleasant experience – especially for children. A roll-up mattress is easy to store, doesn’t take up much space, and can be opened in seconds. It provides insulation from the floor and transforms any protected space into a comfortable corner to lie down. It is suitable for children, guests, or as a supplement for those who do not have a bed in the Mamad.

In an era where the home Mamad has become an integral part of home planning and family considerations, Poliron Kibbutz Zikim offers a practical and comfortable sleeping solution. Instead of viewing the Mamad only as an additional room equipped for its designated purpose – a children’s room, office, or storage – it can include a quality fold-out sofa, allowing the space to become a full sleeping area when needed. This way, it is possible to stay in the Mamad comfortably for an entire night without running between rooms during alarms, maintaining a calmer and safer routine for the whole household.

Blanket and sleeping bag – maintaining body warmth: Protected spaces tend to be cold, especially at night or during transitional seasons. A soft blanket provides a quick and pleasant solution for curling up, while a sleeping bag offers complete warmth – an excellent solution for overnight stays or extended periods.

The major advantage: They are easy to store permanently in the Mamad closet, ensuring they are always available when needed.

Fleece jacket and thermal clothing – a smart layer of warmth: Instead of relying solely on space heating (which is not always available), it is better to maintain body warmth with layers. A lightweight fleece jacket warms quickly without being cumbersome, and thermal clothing provides a base layer that preserves heat even during prolonged sitting.

Important tip: Prepare a thermal set in advance for each family member and keep it in a permanent closet within the protected space.

Telescopic chair – comfortable seating anywhere: Not every Mamad has enough chairs for everyone. A foldable telescopic chair opens to full height in seconds, is strong and stable, and folds into a very compact size when not in use. This is an ideal solution for small spaces or shared shelters in a building.

Rechargeable flashlight – light available at all times: During emergencies, power outages may occur. A quality rechargeable flashlight is a basic item in every protected space – for finding equipment, providing light for children at night, and creating a general sense of security.

Recommendation: Choose a flashlight with USB charging and ensure it is always fully charged.

Proper preparation of the protected space is not limited to protective measures – it also involves creating conditions that allow for a calmer and more comfortable stay for the whole family.

A few simple items such as a roll-up mattress, personal heating solutions, a compact chair, and a rechargeable flashlight can make a big difference – especially for children or during extended stays.

Early preparation reduces unnecessary stress when it matters most and allows focusing on the most important thing: Keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.
