Samsung is expected to make an unusual move in its flagship lineup for 2025: Instead of the familiar trio of devices – Regular, Plus, and Ultra – the company will likely eliminate the Plus model and replace it with the Galaxy S26 Edge, the ultra-thin version that was already launched this year as part of the Galaxy S25 series. If this move materializes, it would be a significant change in Samsung’s premium series strategy, one that is expected to alter the segmentation and offering to consumers.

The Galaxy S25 Edge was announced last May alongside the other models in the series and became the thinnest model Samsung has ever introduced within its flagship line – with a 6.7-inch screen and a thickness of just 5.8 mm. Although it was initially launched as something of an experimental model, it appears that next year it will officially replace the Plus model and become part of the main trio of the series.

The signs of this come from Samsung’s model numbers – which consistently end in different digits for each version: 1 for the regular model, 6 for the Plus, and 8 for the Ultra. In recent records, a new number appeared ending in 7 – the same ending Samsung used for the S25 Edge.

In addition, another model number was found ending in 2 – instead of 1, which was previously used for the base model. A small change like this may hint at a hardware update: A slightly larger screen, an upgraded battery, or other improvements that could justify the change in numbering.

This trend resembles a similar move reportedly in the works at Apple, which, according to reports, plans to drop the iPhone Plus model this year and launch the iPhone 17 Air instead – an ultra-thin model aimed at users who prefer light and compact devices. Samsung may see this as an opportunity to position the Edge as a competitive alternative.
