The Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez admitted that she had “never been on a date — but that’s about to change.” The tennis star, who has already reached the final of the US Open, is still searching for the right partner and, according to her, she has never (!) gone on a date with a guy.

How does she plan to change that? In a video she posted on Instagram, Fernandez invited “men from Montreal” to apply for a first date. She did so ahead of the National Bank Open — her home tournament. The WTA 1000-level tournament is set to take place in Montreal from July 27 to August 7, and Fernandez revealed that she had already received more than 100 messages on the first day.

The unusual call on social media was no coincidence: it was her father and coach, Jorge, who encouraged her to do it. Fernandez said that he had asked her if she had ever been on a date. She had answered “no.” Then, he had said, “Well, it’s time.”

His only requirement: every potential candidate must meet him first. Fernandez agreed immediately. The tennis player is aware of how difficult it is to maintain a relationship in this world. She explained that one is almost always in long-distance relationships, and that it’s hard to build something stable — unless one dates someone from the tour. But she strongly advised against doing that.

Her ideal date? Very simple — coffee, a conversation, and maybe a walk. Fernandez said that she just wanted to know what it feels like.

In the love arena, Fernandez’s life is relatively quiet — but on the court, she’s busier than ever. Currently ranked 36th in the world, she has already won four singles titles in her career. Her biggest achievement came at age 19, when she reached the final of the US Open in 2021 — where she lost to Britain’s Emma Raducanu in straight sets. Currently, both of them are playing in the semifinals of the Washington tournament.
