Authorities were finally able to apprehend Ed, a runaway pet zebra, after the fugitive spent over a week on the run in Tennessee, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a Sunday Facebook post.

Ed, who became a viral internet sensation, ran amok in Christiana, a small community in central Tennessee.

The runaway had only arrived in Christiana on May 30, a day before his great escape.

The zebra was “airlifted and flown by helicopter back to a waiting trailer” following his adventurous week away from home.

During his time on the run, Ed was spotted on a major interstate "scampering across the highways in both the eastbound and westbound lanes."

Despite their efforts, authorities were unable to catch Ed as he would bolt into a wooded area and spend days in hiding, the office said.

Ed's claim to fame

While a source of stress for authorities, Ed’s adventures around his new neighborhood inspired a number of memes as photos emerged of him exploring his new town.
