Visit the Jerusalem Cinematheque and enjoy a screening of La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker), an emotionally intense opera by Vincenzo Bellini, brought live directly from the Metropolitan Opera House. 

Soprano Nadine Sierra takes the stage as Adina, the opera’s main heroine, who must recapture the trust of her true love due to a misunderstanding. Director Rolando Villazón uses the plot of this very romantic production to expand on the human psyche in general. In Italian, with English subtitles. As usual in this series, audience members will be able to go behind the scenes during the live transmission and watch interviews with the singers and other talents during intermissions.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 20

Attend a concert by Ben Iluz as he performs songs from his latest album, Yesh Bach Adayin Kesem (“Some Magic in You Still”). Held as part of the Inner Voices Festival (Kolot Mebefnim), a five-day Jerusalem gathering that deals with mental difficulties and pain – a deep dive into the human soul.

Other events include a performance of the play The Marriage Contract by Ephraim Kishon, in which the actors are former soldiers dealing with PTSD (Sunday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m.). Leah Roni Hazon’s very black humor stand-up comedy show, What Does Not Kill, addresses this mental health condition (Thursday, October 23 at 8:30 p.m.).

Organized by the Acacia Tree Foundation and the Jerusalem Municipality, to assist those with special needs.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21

Watch Netalie Braun’s recent film Shooting, composed of three short movies. One is about how a war staged for the silver screen leads to a village being evacuated. Another is about how security forces place a gun in the home of a Jerusalem family just to film an action scene. The third is the story of a man who is a stage expert on props and guns, who suffers from PTSD.

The film won the DocAviv prize this year for how it expertly presents the machinery of image-making with the larger forces that shape, or crush, society.

Attend a special 90-minute concert in the Hatikvah Project series of performances at the Jerusalem Theatre. The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, under conductor Yuval Zorn, will perform Yizkor by Paul Ben-Haim and Kaddish by Mieczyslaw Weinberg.

Hop over to the YMCA and enjoy the International Series of Concerts with the Ariel Quartet. Cellist Amit Even-Tov, viola player Jan Gruning, and violinists Alexandra Kazovsky and Gershon Gerchikow will perform Haydn’s String Quartet in E Flat Major Op. 33 No. 2, “The Joke”; Alban Berg’s String Quartet Op. 3; and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 Op. 132.
