IDF Arabic Spokesperson Col. Avichay Adraee is set to retire from the IDF after over 20 years within the Spokesperson’s Unit, according to reports on Tuesday.

Adraee began his military service in the Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 8200 Signal Intelligence Unit, and joined the Spokesperson’s Unit in 2005.

Army Radio’s Doron Kadosh clarified that there is currently no timeline for Adraee to leave the role, and that discussions are ongoing with IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin over both the timing and who should succeed Adraee.

A symbol of the IDF

Adraee has gained prominence, particularly since the start of the Israel-Hamas War, and often features in Arabic-language media as a symbol of the IDF.

Due to his prominence, he has also come under physical threat and has been assigned close protective security, Kadosh noted.
