Ami Yogev, a 46-year-old Israeli tourist, went missing in Greece on Tuesday evening, according to Israel's KAN News, citing statements from his family.
He set out on Sunday for a hike in the Mount Olympus region, his family told the press, adding that they lost contact with him shortly after that.
The last reported contact was with his mother, to whom he sent a photo from the second stop on the trail he was hiking.
"The Israeli Consul in Athens and the Foreign Ministry's Department for Israelis Abroad have been in contact with local authorities, working to provide all possible assistance in locating the Israeli with whom contact has been lost in Greece," the ministry said in a statement.
Yogev's family reported to be extremely anxious about his wherabouts
According to a post about him in a Facebook group for Israelis traveling in northern Greece, Yogev's family is in a state of "extreme anxiety."
Yogev did not take out any travel insurance, the Facebook post claimed, adding that his family cannot afford to hire a private rescue team. Sivan Zamir, the tour guide who runs the Facebook group, said that she would be traveling to the area to launch a search effort. She noted that she was in contact with mountain rescue operatives and local emergency units.
Zamir encouraged travelers in the area to speak out if they had seen or heard of anyone matching Yogev's description out on the trails.
