Seven Israelis were lightly to moderately injured in a fire that broke out in a Jerusalem apartment during Shabbat, Israel Fire and Rescue Authority said on Saturday evening.

The apartment, located on the third floor of an apartment building in the Gilo neighborhood of Israel's capital, broke out into flames in the early hours of Saturday morning and was completely burned down, Fire and Rescue's Jerusalem District added.

Firefighters who arrived on the scene extinguished the flames and rescued seven people from the apartment.

One person was moderately injured in the fire, with the rest being reported as lightly injured. All were rushed to a nearby hospital by Magen David Adom paramedics.

Fire and Rescue's Jerusalem District Commander Eli Edri said the fire remained active as firefighters approached the scene earlier on Saturday, with heavy smoke spreading throughout the apartment building.

He said several of those wounded lightly had suffered from smoke inhalation and were rushed by MDA paramedics for further treatment in a nearby medical center.

Edri noted that "the extensive use of heating equipment during the wintertime must be managed responsibly and in line with security protocol."
