The Israeli government urged Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to drop his pledge to honor the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he traveled to the country.

"We believe that Prime Minister Carney should, of course, reconsider this and welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu, the leader of the only Jewish state and democratic country in the Middle East, to Canada," Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian told reporters.

Carney tells Bloomberg that he would arrest Netanyahu

Carney stated on Monday that he would uphold former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to uphold the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu.

When asked directly by Mishal Husain on Bloomberg’s The Mishal Husain Show whether he would be prepared to arrest Netanyahu, Carney replied: “Yes.”

“We saw that the actions of the Netanyahu government were explicitly designed to end any possibility of a State of Palestine, in violation of the UN Charter and going against Canadian government policy of whatever political stripe since 1947,” he added.
