At least five people are dead, and 41 are still missing after a ferry caught fire off Indonesia's Madura island, the country's search and rescue agency said in a statement on Sunday.
The ferry was carrying 271 passengers and crew members when it caught fire on its journey from East Java Island to South Sulawesi Island.
Of the people on board the ship, 225 have been rescued. Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Basarnas, said that the search was still ongoing.
Cause of the fire remains unknown
Basarnas received information about the fire from the ship's captain on Sunday morning, however contact was later lost.
In a video posted to social media, Basarnas explained that "the Surabaya Search and Rescue office had received information that passenger ship KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 was on fire."
Later, the company confirmed that the ferry had been "almost entirely engulfed in flames," with passenger holding on inside the ship while awaiting rescue.
Footage released by the National Search and Rescue Agency showed thick black smoke billowing from one side of the ferry and spreading across the ship.
The statement added that the cause of the fire remained unknown.
