Danish MP Rasumus Jarlov told CNN on Tuesday that if US President Donald Trump did invade Greenland, "it would be a war, and we would be fighting against each other."
"We know that the Americans are stronger than us," Jarlov continued, "but it is our duty to defend our land and our people."
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump shared texts sent to him by French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte shortly after stating that he would be meeting with world leaders to discuss Greenland at this week's Davos World Economic Forum.
"We have to have it. They have to have this done. They can't protect it, Denmark, they're wonderful people," Trump told reporters. "I know the leaders, they're very good people, but they don't even go there.
Denmark will not abandon Greenland, PM says
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday that the kingdom will not abandon Greenland, amid Trump's repeated statements of intent to take over the Danish territory.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, speaking via a translator, said on Tuesday that the use of military force against the Arctic territory was unlikely but could not be ruled out.
