Former US President Joe Biden commended US President Donald Trump and his team for securing a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas in a Tuesday morning post to X/Twitter.
"I commend President Trump and his team for their work to get a renewed ceasefire deal over the finish line," Biden wrote.
In the post, Biden celebrated the release of the hostages and the opportunity for Gazans to "finally get a chance to rebuild their lives."
"I am deeply grateful and relieved that this day has come," the former president wrote, "for the last living 20 hostages who have been through unimaginable hell and are finally reunited with their families and loved ones, and for the civilians in Gaza who have experienced immeasurable loss and will finally get the chance to rebuild their lives."
Biden continued, "The road to this deal was not easy. My Administration worked relentlessly to bring hostages home, get relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war."
"Now, with the backing of the United States and the world, the Middle East is on a path to peace that I hope endures and a future for Israelis and Palestinians alike with equal measures of peace, dignity, and safety," he concluded.
Biden's attempts at a ceasefire
Biden undertook efforts during his presidency in 2024 to end the war between Israel and Hamas. In September of that year, the former US president informed the UN that he had "put forward with Qatar and Egypt a ceasefire and hostage deal that’s been endorsed by the UN Security Council."
The mediators at that time were Qatar and Egypt, with the help of the UN.
“Now is the time for the parties to finalize its terms, bring the hostages home to secure security for Israel and Gaza free of Hamas grip, ease the suffering in Gaza, and end this [war],” Biden had said.
Meanwhile, the former president also strongly sympathized with Gazans, stating that "Too many families [are] dislocated [in Gaza], crowding in the tents, facing a dire humanitarian situation. They didn’t ask for this war that Hamas started."
In January this year, Biden announced a ceasefire deal between Israel and the terror group.
"It's a very good afternoon because, at long last, I can announce a ceasefire deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas after more than 15 months of conflict," Biden said. "That began with [Hamas's] brutal massacre on October the seventh, more than 15 months of terror for the hostages, their families, the Israeli people."
He had also said that "there was no other way for this war to end other than a hostage deal."
