The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was placed on lockdown Thursday after an individual previously dismissed from the institution reportedly returned to campus armed, according to multiple news reports.
Gunshots were reported inside Bancroft Hall, the residence hall for midshipmen. One official on campus stated that the individual was “knocking on doors pretending to be a military policeman.”
Naval Support Activity Annapolis confirmed the lockdown in coordination with local law enforcement.
“Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy,” said NSAA Public Affairs Officer LT Naweed Lemar. “The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This is a developing situation, and we will provide updates as they become available.”
Fox News reported that one person was injured due to the threat and that the Naval Security Forces are investigating the incident.
"One person has been medevaced with injuries. They are in stable condition. The base remains on lockdown. We will provide updates as they become available," an official told Fox.
Lockdown to end soon
Officials told Fox that a sweep is underway and the lockdown would end soon.
