A 21-year-old American national was stabbed in the face on Sunday while stopping two men from harassing young female passengers in Germany, Dresden police and local media reported.

The man was stabbed after an argument broke out at the Neustädter Markt station. 

After stabbing the man, the two assailants attempted to flee, although one suspect, a 21-year-old Syrian national, was caught nearby.

The American man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. “The US citizen suffered multiple cuts to his face with a knife,” police spokesperson Thomas Geithner told German outlet Bild.

About the suspect

Searches are continuing for the second assailant, though the Syrian national is currently being investigated for grievous bodily harm, among other potential charges.

The Syrian national was reportedly released, though the investigation continues. It is believed the unknown assailant was responsible for the knife attack.

Dresden police are still looking to speak to witnesses, especially those aboard the train where the attack took place.
