A man was detained by the Norwegian police after a security situation was reported at the Trondheim synagogue in Norway on Thursday, according to police and the Jewish community.

The local outlet VG, citing the incident commander at the scene, two people were initially seen in a car near the synagogue.

One of them got out of the vehicle, while the other drove away at high speed, leading to a car chase heading out of the city and toward Orkanger.

John Arne Moen, chairman of the Jewish community in Trondheim (DJST), told VG earlier on Thursday that "there is an ongoing police operation at the synagogue."

A neighbor described a large police presence, with officers wearing bulletproof vests, helmets, and carrying rifles.

Police say event ended, one person was arrested

Police said in a later statement that the incident had ended, that there was no risk for the people near the synagogue, and that they had arrested one of the suspects.

"We understand that people may be concerned about incidents like this related to the synagogue, but we want to reassure and reassure our residents that the situation is under control and would like to emphasize that it is safe for residents of Trondheim city center," the police said in a statement.

The arrested suspect will remain in police custody and be questioned this evening. The police also informed that the car he was driving was stolen.

A journalist from a local newspaper reported that an event was underway at the synagogue at the time and that no one was allowed to enter or leave the cordoned-off area.
