The Consulate General of Israel in New York unveiled billboards in Times Square to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday.

The billboards marking the day of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945 were posted in cooperation with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

“Nearly 90 years after the Nazis rose to power, history is repeating itself: the silence of leaders around the world in the face of the surge in antisemitism, incitement, and boycott initiatives is dangerous,” Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, said.

Throughout the Israel-Hamas War, Israel’s consulate in New York has used billboards to call attention to the plight of the hostages kept by Hamas in Gaza, as well as to counter allegations of war crimes.

Previous Times Square campaigns

In August 2025, the consulate displayed images in Times Square showing former hostage Evyatar David in an emaciated state following Hamas’s release of a video showing him being forced to dig his own grave. In December, the consulate launched a campaign to bring attention to the final hostage Ran Gvili, killed on October 7, battling Hamas.

“Unlike in the past, the State of Israel knows how to defend itself with determination and strength,” Akunis said.

“We have the capability to repel any enemy that declares its goal to be the destruction of the Jewish people. Israel will not hesitate to act in order to defend itself and ensure that history does not repeat itself.”
