Activists from Greece's Communist Party (KKE) displayed two massive banners on the Acropolis in Athens on Friday morning, calling for an end to Israel's alleged genocide in Gaza as well as proclaiming "Free Palestine," the party's youth wing (KNE) announced over social media.
In a video shared by KNE's media arm, activists can be seen atop the Acropolis cliff, holding banners written in both Greek and English, as well as waving flags in the air.
The banner read "Stop the genocide. No cooperation with the murderous state of Israel. Free Palestine."
"We denounce the inhumanity and barbarity of the murderous state of Israel [and the] genocide of the Palestinian people that is being carried out together with the USA and the EU," KKE parliamentarian Christos Katsotis said in a video statement from the scene.
"No one can remain silent. The people's struggle needs to be strengthened with the demand that the government stop every cooperation with the murderous state of Israel and recognize the state of Palestine, in accordance with the unanimous decision made by the parliament in 2015."
Anti-Israel demonstrations in Greece
The KKE banners come amid a rising trend of anti-Israel demonstrations in Greece in protest of the ongoing war in Gaza.
Earlier in September, an Israeli was wounded in clashes with Palestinians in Athens, with anti-Israel activists later urging Greek authorities to probe the Israeli for war crimes.
Back in August, Greek pro-Palestinian activists held a day of action against Israeli tourists, with demonstrators calling for an end to Greek-Israeli relations.
