The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has announced the establishment of the Max and Desiree Blankfeld Endowed Prize for Transformative Innovation in Aerospace, made possible through a generous gift from Max and Desiree Blankfeld of Houston, Texas.
The new endowed prize will recognize groundbreaking contributions in aerospace engineering while fostering sustained international collaboration and academic exchange. Led by the Technion’s Stephen B. Klein Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, the prize will alternate annually between two tracks: A Distinguished Leader Award, honoring a senior researcher whose work has significantly shaped the field, and an Early Career Award, supporting an outstanding emerging scholar and enabling extended research residency at the Technion.
Through lectures, joint research, and close engagement with the faculty researchers and students, prize recipients will contribute to a vibrant environment of innovation, mentorship, and global scientific dialogue.
Max Blankfeld’s relationship with the Technion reflects both a deep personal connection and an extraordinary commitment to its future. He initially studied Aeronautical Engineering, including time as a Technion student, before pivoting to a career as a foreign correspondent and later founding and managing several successful ventures in public relations and consumer goods in Brazil and the United States.
Call for nominations
This year’s prize, also the first one to be awarded, will recognize an internationally distinguished aerospace engineer or scientist. Candidates may be drawn from any area of aerospace engineering or a closely related discipline, including interdisciplinary fields with substantial impact on aerospace research, technology, or practice.

Propelling the future of Israel’s aerospace
The Stephen B. Klein Faculty of Aerospace Engineering plays an important role in Israel's scientific and technological advancement.
For a country whose technological independence, economic ambitions and security are closely tied to aerospace, the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering has a key position. Founded in 1954, it is Israel’s only dedicated aerospace engineering faculty. It is also a globally recognized research center. The 2025 Shanghai Ranking places the Technion 21st in the world in Aerospace Engineering, putting the Israeli faculty alongside leading aerospace programs internationally.
What makes the faculty particularly notable is the breadth of research taking place under one roof. Researchers work across disciplines including aerodynamics and fluid mechanics, structures, propulsion and combustion, guidance, navigation and control, astronautics, and others. The faculty combines theoretical, computational and experimental research, supported by specialized facilities ranging from wind tunnels and jet-engine laboratories to ramjet and scramjet test cells, autonomous-flight facilities and high-performance computing. The Max and Desiree Blankfeld Prize strengthens the Technion’s role as a global hub for aerospace research and collaboration.

The faculty offers research-oriented MSc and PhD degrees, as well as a professionally oriented ME program. For international students, the faculty offers an accessible route into this research environment. The programs are conducted in English, and students can receive comprehensive financial support including tuition coverage, stipends, housing, and funding for international conferences.
